Chapter 1

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a self-custodial crypto wallet that lets you store, send, and receive Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, and interact with decentralized applications (dApps) across every major EVM-compatible blockchain. Available as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge, as well as a mobile app for iOS and Android, MetaMask is the most widely used Web3 wallet in the world with over 30 million monthly active users.

"Self-custodial" means you control your private keys — not a company, not an exchange, not MetaMask itself. Your funds are secured by a 12-word seed phrase that only you possess. This is fundamentally different from storing crypto on Coinbase or Binance, where the exchange holds the keys on your behalf.

MetaMask serves as your gateway to DeFi — connecting you to protocols like Uniswap, Aave, Coinstancy, and thousands of other decentralized applications. If you want to swap tokens, lend crypto, provide liquidity, or earn yield, MetaMask is the tool that makes it possible.

Self-Custodial

You hold your private keys. No third party can freeze, seize, or access your funds without your seed phrase.

Multi-Network

Connect to Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Optimism, and any EVM-compatible chain with one click.

dApp Gateway

Connect to thousands of DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and Web3 apps directly from your browser or phone.

Chapter 2

Installing MetaMask

MetaMask is available as a browser extension and as a mobile app. The most important rule: only download MetaMask from the official website at metamask.io. Fake MetaMask extensions and apps are a common phishing vector — they look identical to the real thing but steal your seed phrase the moment you enter it.

1

Browser Extension (Recommended)

Go to metamask.io and click "Download." Select your browser — Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge. You will be redirected to the official browser extension store. Click "Add to Browser" and confirm the installation. The MetaMask fox icon will appear in your browser toolbar.

Verification tip: On Chrome Web Store, confirm the developer is listed as "metamask.io" and the extension has millions of users. Never install MetaMask from a link in an email, Discord message, or social media ad.

2

Mobile App (iOS & Android)

Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for "MetaMask." Verify the publisher is "MetaMask" by ConsenSys. Download and open the app. The mobile version includes a built-in browser for accessing DeFi apps directly from your phone — useful for quick portfolio checks and on-the-go transactions.

You can sync your existing browser wallet to mobile by importing your seed phrase, or create a brand-new wallet on mobile and use it independently.

Chapter 3

Creating Your Wallet

After installation, MetaMask will walk you through wallet creation. This is the most important step — pay close attention to the seed phrase backup process.

1

Agree to Terms & Create Password

Click "Create a new wallet" and accept the terms of use. Create a strong password (at least 8 characters, mix of letters, numbers, and symbols). This password encrypts your wallet on the local device only — it is not your seed phrase and cannot recover your wallet on a new device.

2

Back Up Your Seed Phrase

MetaMask will display a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (seed phrase). Write these 12 words down on paper in the exact order shown. Do not take a screenshot. Do not store it in a notes app or cloud service. This seed phrase is the master key to your wallet — anyone who has it can access all your funds from any device.

3

Confirm Your Seed Phrase

MetaMask will ask you to re-enter several words from your seed phrase to confirm you wrote them down correctly. Select the words in the correct order. This verification step ensures you have a reliable backup before you start using the wallet.

4

Wallet Ready

Your wallet is created. You will see your Ethereum address (starting with 0x...), a balance of 0 ETH, and the MetaMask dashboard. You can now receive crypto, add networks, and connect to DeFi applications.

Why Your Seed Phrase Matters

  • Your seed phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose access to your device. Lose the phrase, lose your funds — permanently.
  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone. No legitimate service, support agent, or dApp will ever ask for it.
  • Store it offline — written on paper, engraved on metal, or in a fireproof safe. Never in email, cloud storage, or a digital file on your computer.
Chapter 4

Adding Networks to MetaMask

MetaMask connects to Ethereum mainnet by default, but you will likely want to use Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, and Polygon for faster and cheaper transactions. Gas fees on these L2s are typically under $0.10, compared to $2-20+ on Ethereum mainnet.

The easiest way to add networks is through chainlist.org — a trusted directory of EVM networks. Visit the site, connect your MetaMask, search for the network you want, and click "Add to MetaMask." The network parameters (RPC URL, chain ID, currency symbol) are filled in automatically.

Network Type Avg Gas Fee Best For
Ethereum L1 (default) $2 - $20+ High-value transactions, max security
Arbitrum L2 (Optimistic Rollup) $0.01 - $0.10 DeFi, trading, general use
Base L2 (Optimistic Rollup) $0.01 - $0.05 Coinbase ecosystem, low fees
Polygon Sidechain / L2 < $0.01 Ultra-cheap transactions, gaming
Optimism L2 (Optimistic Rollup) $0.01 - $0.10 DeFi, governance, Superchain apps

To move tokens between networks, you will need to bridge your crypto. Bridging transfers tokens from one chain to another — for example, sending USDC from Ethereum to Arbitrum so you can use it with lower fees.

Chapter 5

Receiving & Sending Crypto

Once your wallet is set up, you can receive tokens from exchanges, friends, or DeFi protocols, and send tokens to any Ethereum address. Here is how each direction works.

Receiving Crypto

1

Click your account name or address at the top of MetaMask to copy your wallet address to the clipboard. Your address looks like 0x1a2B...3c4D.

2

Share this address with the sender — paste it into a crypto exchange withdrawal form or send it to the person paying you. Your address is public and safe to share (like a bank account number).

3

Make sure the sender uses the correct network. If someone sends USDC on Arbitrum but you are looking at MetaMask on Ethereum, you will not see the tokens until you switch to the Arbitrum network. The tokens are not lost — they are on a different chain.

Sending Crypto

1

Click "Send" in MetaMask and paste the recipient's wallet address. Double-check the address — crypto transactions are irreversible. Sending to the wrong address means permanent loss.

2

Select the token and enter the amount. MetaMask will show the estimated gas fee for the transaction. On Ethereum mainnet, a simple token transfer typically costs $1-5 in gas. On L2s like Arbitrum or Base, the same transaction costs pennies.

3

Review the details and click "Confirm." The transaction will be broadcast to the network. You can track its status by clicking the pending transaction in MetaMask or searching the transaction hash on a block explorer like Etherscan.

Connecting MetaMask to DeFi Apps

MetaMask's real power comes alive when you connect it to DeFi protocols. Here is how to connect to the most popular apps and what to expect at each step.

How to Connect (Universal Steps)

1

Visit the dApp's official website (e.g., app.uniswap.org, app.aave.com, app.coinstancy.com). Always type the URL manually or use a bookmark — never click links from Discord, Telegram, or email.

2

Click "Connect Wallet" on the dApp. A list of wallet options will appear. Select "MetaMask." The MetaMask popup will open asking you to approve the connection.

3

Review which accounts and permissions the dApp is requesting. Click "Connect." The dApp can now read your wallet address and balances but cannot move your funds without additional approval.

4

When you perform an action (swap, deposit, lend), MetaMask will pop up asking you to approve a smart contract interaction and show the gas fee. Review the transaction details, then click "Confirm."

Uniswap

Swap any ERC-20 token on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, and Optimism. The largest decentralized exchange by volume.

Security Best Practices

Self-custody gives you full control — but it also means full responsibility. These security practices will protect your MetaMask wallet from the most common attack vectors.

Never Share Your Seed Phrase

No legitimate service, support agent, or website will ever ask for your 12-word seed phrase. If anyone asks for it, it is a scam — 100% of the time, no exceptions.

Use a Hardware Wallet

For holdings over $1,000, pair MetaMask with a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor. Your private keys stay on the physical device, so even if your computer is compromised, your funds remain safe. MetaMask supports hardware wallets natively — just connect and add the hardware account.

Revoke Token Approvals

When you approve a dApp to spend your tokens, that permission remains active indefinitely. Use revoke.cash to review and revoke old approvals. This limits your exposure if a smart contract you previously approved gets exploited.

Detect Phishing Attempts

Bookmark the official URLs for dApps you use regularly. Phishing sites clone legitimate DeFi interfaces pixel-for-pixel. Check the URL bar carefully before signing any transaction. MetaMask includes a built-in phishing detector that warns you about known malicious sites.

MetaMask Alternatives

MetaMask is the industry standard, but several excellent alternatives have emerged that address specific pain points. Here is a brief comparison of the most popular options.

Wallet Best For Platforms Key Feature
Rabby Power users & DeFi Browser, mobile Pre-sign simulation, auto chain switching
Rainbow Mobile-first users iOS, Android, browser Beautiful UI, ENS integration, portfolio view
Coinbase Wallet Coinbase users Browser, mobile Easy fiat on-ramp, Base network native
Trust Wallet Multi-chain beginners iOS, Android, browser 70+ blockchains, built-in staking

All of these wallets are self-custodial and work with the same DeFi apps as MetaMask. Your seed phrase is portable — you can import an existing MetaMask wallet into Rabby or Rainbow without moving your funds. The choice comes down to personal preference for UI, features, and workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MetaMask free to use?
Yes. MetaMask is completely free to download and use. The extension and mobile app cost nothing. You only pay network gas fees when you send transactions or interact with smart contracts on Ethereum or other blockchains. MetaMask itself does not charge fees for holding, receiving, or viewing your crypto.
What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
If you lose your seed phrase and also lose access to your MetaMask device (broken laptop, lost phone), your wallet and all funds in it are permanently unrecoverable. No one — not MetaMask, not Ethereum developers, not customer support — can restore access without the seed phrase. This is why writing it down on paper and storing it in a secure, offline location is critical.
Can I use MetaMask on multiple devices?
Yes. You can import the same wallet on multiple devices using your 12-word seed phrase. Install MetaMask on the new device, choose "Import an existing wallet," and enter your seed phrase. Both devices will show the same accounts, balances, and transaction history. Keep in mind that each device has its own password — the seed phrase is what links them.
Does MetaMask support Bitcoin?
No. MetaMask is an Ethereum-based wallet that supports EVM-compatible networks only — Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Optimism, Avalanche, BNB Chain, and similar chains. It does not support native Bitcoin (BTC). If you need to hold BTC alongside Ethereum tokens, consider using a multi-chain wallet or wrapping your Bitcoin as WBTC (an ERC-20 token) to use it within MetaMask.
How do I protect myself from phishing scams?
Only download MetaMask from metamask.io or official app stores. Never click wallet-related links from emails, Discord DMs, or social media ads. Always verify the URL before entering your seed phrase — MetaMask will never ask for your seed phrase in a popup or website. Use a hardware wallet for large holdings, and regularly review token approvals at revoke.cash to limit smart contract exposure.
What are gas fees and why do they change?
Gas fees are payments to Ethereum validators for processing your transaction. They fluctuate based on network demand — when many people are using Ethereum simultaneously, gas fees increase. MetaMask shows an estimated fee before you confirm any transaction. You can save on gas by transacting during off-peak hours or using Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Base, or Optimism, where fees are typically under $0.10.
